Hell’O Collective opens “Balance” at Urban Spree Galerie

Starting on Friday 01.06 at 19:00, Urban Spree Galerie invites you to the Opening of “Balance“, a solo presentation of new works by the famed belgian duo Hell’O Collective in our main galerie space and their first solo show in Germany.

Running in parallel with their 10-year retrospective museum solo show at the BAM in Mons (“Enjoy the Show” at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, Belgium, until 29.07.2018), “Balance” brings a brand new series of paintings on canvas and on paper to the Berlin audience.

For the Brussels-based duo, “Balance” reflects upon the constant search of the equilibrium between shape, color, and momentum in their painting practice and the need to achieve a new balance occurred as a renewed necessity after the hefty preparations for the museum show

Hell’O will also sign their new complete monograph “Untitled Oddyssey“, published in early May by CFC Editions.

Hell’O is a belgian artistic duo consisting of Antoine Detaille and Jérôme Meynen, active in murals as well as studio works and installations.

Several characteristics of their art indicate a filiation with the middle-age universe close to Jerome Bosch: an elegant and precise graphism, a taste for multiple, intertwined universes, and abundant references to a corpus of grotesque iconography, albeit perfectly mastered. Abstracted human bodies are among the many recurrent elements that are present in their paintings together with abstract, geometric signs, creating an overall rich personal mythology.

Urban Spree Prints will also release 2 screenprints specially made by the duo for the occasion.

Sicoer: Explorations

Urban Spree Galerie presents “Explorations“, the first solo show of the Krakow-based calligraffiti painter SICOER in Germany. “Calligraffiti” is a portmanteau word combining the art of calligraphy with elements of graffiti. It is a non-classical calligraphic discipline, modeled by the street and the parallel practice of graffiti.

“Explorations” is the outcome of several working sessions at Urban Spree Berlin in January, February, and June 2020, interspersed with intense studio time in Krakow during the lockdown, resulting in an unexpected dialogue in time and space.

For this 6-month residency, Sicoer has conducted extensive research and experiments about form and flow, perfecting structure, balance, colors, texture, free flow and ultimately stripping down his technique to the simple expression of one brushstroke, a fragment of the whole universe, a distillation of years of lettering practice.

“Explorations” is the outcome of a spiritual journey through letters. Sicoer has built over time elements of an abstracted language, an ever-morphing alphabet derived from the old Slavic scriptures, rooted in the Eastern part of Europe and universal at the same time.

Sicoer is a calligraffiti painter based in Krakow well known for his vandal graffiti as well as his handstyle studio works. Having started graffiti in 1998 and still active nowadays, Sicoer created in parallel a studio practice based on the combination of letters, geometric compositions, flow and a specific use of color range. Relentlessly exploring, Sicoer turned recently his graphic experiments towards even more calligraffitic abstraction.

postponed: CTM Festival presents Senyawa / Gabber Modus Operandi

Senyawa / Gabber Modus Operandi

28 April 2020
Doors: 20:00, Show: 21:00
Tickets: 16,00 € https://disk.stager.de/web/tickets/420575

Two groundbreaking groups from Indonesia appear together on a hefty double bill.

Senyawa, the duo of Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi, returns to Berlin for their first appearance since 2016.

Best known for embodying Javanese music traditions while vaulting through frameworks of experimental music practices, Senyawa strikes a challenging balance between avant-garde influences and cultural heritage. With output such as Acaraki and Menjadi, the pair shared a truly contemporary Indonesian music with the rest of the world, thus becoming pioneers of their local scene.

Comprised of Shabara’s deft extended vocal techniques and the frenetic neo-tribal output of instrument builder Suryadi, Senyawa’s sound sees traditional Indonesian instrumentation clash with garage guitar distortion, as strikingly exemplified on their most recent album, Sujud (Sublime Frequencies, 2018).

They are joined by the now-infamous duo of Kasimyn and Ican Harem, aka Gabber Modus Operandi. Straddling the line between the sacred and the banal, their collaboration was born out of a shared obsession for all things high-octane and fast-paced. Since their explosive performance at CTM 2019, Gabber Modus Operandi have also made a name for themselves as trailblazers for a new generation.

In addition to exuberant, raucous live shows, Kas and Ican are best known for exploding the challenging sounds of gabber, footwork, grindcore, and noise with a number of uniquely Indonesian sounds such as jathilan, dangdut koplo, and funkot—as heard on singular, acclaimed releases PUXXXIMAXXX and HOXXXYA.

Pharmakon – Urban Spree, Berlin

New date!
Moved from April 18th to Dec 9th.
+++ Tickets remain valid! +++

Doors: 20h, Start: 20h45.

“Devour” marks the fourth full-length record from New York City based artist Margaret Chardiet’s project Pharmakon and the most intense output of her 12 plus years creating industrial noise. Like her previous albums, Devour comes with a strong concept that is exorcised throughout the five demolishing tracks on the album, using imagery and language of self-cannibalism as allegory for the self-destructive nature of humans. Each of the five songs echoes a stage of grief associated with this cyclical chamber of self-destruction and the chaos surrounding us that leads us to devour ourselves in an attempt to balance the agony.

The album was recorded by Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and is the first Pharmakon album recorded live in studio. The A and B sides were each recorded as a continuous take with vocals from start to finish, marking a totally new process for the artist that allows the ferocity and immediacy of her live performance to resonate throughout. Devour also explores new sonic territory, with denser electronics, groovier hooks, and moments of her most unhinged vocal deliveries to date. As one of the premiere vanguards of modern industrial and power electronics, Chardiet continuously pushes the genres and everyone involved in them, and with the release of Devour, she has once again changed the game.

Wolf Mountains – “Urban Dangerous Tour”

The third studio album “Urban Dangerous” by the garage-rock trio Wolf Mountains opens further doors into the world of timeless pop. The characteristic features like the rolling bass or the 90’s high school rock vocals are still present, but a playground of sound experiments and skits is opened up. The songwriting seems more mature, the riffs more cheeky, the fun factor more balanced, so that the individual songs are amplified by the “hit” factor.

“Urban Dangerous” radiates an energy that increases the mood barometer considerably and can also be enjoyed in all kinds of situations. The R-O-C-K factor plays a big role whether packed in a western look, driving psychedelic blues or with classic indie punk attitude, the Wolf Mountains give the genre the esprit it desperately needs in 2019.

“Urban Dangerous” released on September 27th on Treibender Teppich Records

Doors: 20:00 Uhr, Start: 21:00 Uhr
