Travis Egedy aka Pictureplane is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist whose forays against the status quo have disrupted fashion, galleries, and music in kind. While his 2011 album, Thee Physical, explored sensation and human touch, his newest dives into more ethereal territory: the anxiety of daily life in an era defined by constant technological interaction and observation. But the 11 songs heard here — fleshed out using sonic scraps of industrial, darkwave, ’80s EBM, ’90s house — aren’t purely paranoiac. As the title implies, Technomancer is as much about rediscovering the magic in our relationship with our machines.
Technomancer was recorded across three years in Egedy’s garage, then finished in studios in New York and Los Angeles. He was also touring the world with the likes of Major Lazer and Crystal Castles, exhibiting his visual art in galleries abroad, and reading the works of Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock, men whose research in alt archaeology and ancient tech may help unlock truths about where humankind has been and, more importantly, where we’re headed. The two tracks featuring Skin Town’s Grace Hall (“Self Control,” “Live Forever”) deal with a controversial future that may already be upon us: where reality, even mortality, is able to be engineered.
But for all the eerie Vangelis-style ambiance (“Chaos Radical”), warped rave oddity (“Joyrider”), and distressing mechanized clang (“Death Condition”), Pictureplane’s latest is best defined by its title track. “Technomancer” finds our host grabbing the reigns of the beast, and suggesting that we do the same: “Manipulate your machine,” he sings over an electronic score that feels positively alive, “You’re a technomancer.”
Puschen and Shameless/Limitless proudly present the dream team double headlining bill that is Sean Nicholas Savage and Touchy Mob, both of whom are playing in support of stellar new records. This show is extra sweet for Sean, as it also serves as his Euro tour kick off.
Sean Nicholas Savage
September sees the release of Sean Nicholas Savage’s latest record, Other Death. Savage, a master of tenderness, reflection and projection, has released and toured relentlessly in pursuit of the rarer beauties found only in the nuance of pop song and performance.
Other Death was recorded in Santa Monica, Los Angeles as a collaboration with Agor, of Savage’s Arbutus labelmates Blue Hawaii, while Errhead of Doldrums plays on much of the record. Ramona Gonzalez (Nite Jewel) also makes an appearance, as do TOPS’ Jane Penny and David Carriere. This is
Savage’s highest fidelity recording to date, with daring, captivating, and as always minimal and soft production style. In contrast to his usual introspection, Other Death is immediately more upbeat, uptempo, confident, inspired and delivers more consistent pop singles than any of his previous
Savage is not playing to the middle. Here he gives his listeners, those who crave a harder SNS smack, the energy they crave. This is the release fans will turn to when they want to feel the sophisticated, delicate, and enchanted music of Sean Nicholas Savage at its most brave, free and loud. It’s as if upon being tossed a copy of Other Life, Savage reads the message; “Other Life?” and throws it back at us in blood red, “Other Death”.
The summer of 2015 saw the release of Touchy Mob’s “Let My Wild Boys Shine In The Boomers”. Consisting of 12 tracks (many of which will be familiar frequent Touchy showgoers) recorded over fits and starts in the previous 4 years, the record is surprisingly cohesive and thoroughly excellent. This will mark his first Berlin show since the release of the record.
The concert will be followed by an after party featuring Kirin J Callinan live (XL, Record Makers) + DJ sets by S.N. Savage and Touchy Mob + others!
