Iguana Death Cult
Special Guests: Tanning Bats
14.11.2019 | Berlin – Urban Spree
Doors: 8:00 p.m. Start: 9:00 p.m.
… presented by DIFFUS Magazine

The Rotterdam five-piece Iguana Death Cult first made a name for themselves with a twisted and hard-core garage punk including a hint of psychedelia, then the quintet grew into a band that incorporates post-punk, Krautrock, New Wave, soul and disco. Their second album “Nude Casino” will be released on October 25th on the label Innovative Leisure from LA. It shows the more top-heavy side of her songwriting and her sense for the absurd.

The frenzy of the early years can still be felt today: the band is a barely controllable force of nature. They have made their way from dark doldrums to the SXSW, and they prove that defiant dilettantism and real ability can be perfectly combined and lead to success. Opschoor used to play nimble flamenco ornaments on guitar, but would have broken his fingers on blues riffs. With Reek it was exactly the other way round: From wonderfully primitive punk rock he worked his way up to sophisticated retro soul, psychedelic rock and acid jazz à la Art Blakey. And so they meet in the middle, where Boer’s brawny bass competes against Van Opstal’s jazz-influenced licks.

Because the music scene in the Netherlands is very small and familiar, the rise of Iguana Death Cult to a legendary live act took place at an incredible pace. There is no difference for the band
between occupation and hobby, also because of that she was able to gain a big fanbase quickly. Her debut album “The First Stirring of Hideous Insect Life” was released in 2017.

In comparison, the successor “Nude Casino” sounds rather brittle and unembellished – a sceptical sound that also questions their own former hedonism. Jeroen Reek lets his neuroses run wild and oscillates between wild waking dreams and the narrow limits of reality. His lyrical abilities come to the fore on “Tuesday’s Lament”, the heart of the album: The song is a monologue in five parts, which self-confidently and in a good mood deals with such difficult topics as mortality and faith. The occasional seriousness that blends into the sound and lyrics doesn’t harm the daring of Iguana Death Cult, like the band that has grown into a quintet through Jimmy de Kok on keyboard.
from the first note on.

“Nude Casino” evokes claustrophobic and absurd moods and is dedicated to themes like sleep paralysis (“Half Frisian”) and lost innocence (“Castle in the Sky”). These songs are based on earthly fears like neuroses and conflicts. That’s why the album is permanently jerking with nervous energy, which also comes from the wilder songs dominated by heavy hooks like “Carnal Beat Machine” with its dry disco pulse. Iguana Death Cult celebrate the art of rocking the shit and turning everything on 11. They dig their claws into the music and don’t let go. And they also have fun.

Siglo XX live in Berlin (Farewell Show)

[aufnahme + wiedergabe] presents:

Siglo XX (BE) live
– for the first time in Berlin since over 30 years and for the last time ever –

DJS:

a.e.schatten (coinciDANSES / Bremen)
Jürgen Jakob (Cold Beat Berlin)
robertianjim (The Red Room / Hamburg)

“40 years ago punk was taking Belgium by storm. Just about anyone could grab an instrument and start pounding away on it. And that’s exactly what we did in our neighbourhood in Genk with Siglo XX, which is the name of a mine in Bolivia by the way, but we chose it mainly because we thought the Xs were so cool. We kept on doing this for 13 years: making music, over and over again, different every time, but always true to ourselves, stubborn, defying trends and great expectations. We recorded albums that sold internationally and we toured Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Hungary. For some reason we struck a chord with a broader audience and they kept on following us through the years – and still do – and they’ve been joined by a younger crowd that is catching on to us through the Internet. Because 40 is quite a respectable age, Onderstroom Records is re-releasing the first three Siglo XX 12-inches, remastered but with the original artwork. These records, which have become collector’s items over the years, will be available separately and in a boxed edition.”

Nathy Peluso • Elizabete Balcus

Dawn of the Dance and GreyZone Concerts & Promotion are proud to present:

Nathy Peluso + ELIZABETE BALČUS

Nathy Peluso creates her own unique vibes, with origins in different cultural soundscapes.
Flexible, abstract and dancy music, spiced with magical soundsamples which blend into deliciously executed HipHop and Rap.
She was born in Argentina, but sees herself as a nomad, exploring the world.

ELIZABETE BALČUS is a Latvian musician and performance artist who creates neo-psychedelic dream pop from surprising, collaged, genre juxtapositions that is simultaneously melodic and experimental. Elizabete attended Latvian Academy of Music in order to study classical and jazz flute. Anything is permitted in her musical cosmos: looping flute and voice, clicking electro pop beats and playing fruits as a synthesizer as well, leaving the listener in a blissed out trance like state, somewhere between the waking and sleeping. Live performance engage the audience with a psychedelic and theatrical situation that is as befuddling as it is mesmerizing.

Elizabete’s album “Conarium” is released under the UK label “Liminal Noise” and so far she’s been playing at festivals such “The Great Escape”, “Reeperbahn festival” as well as numerous shows in Italy, Netherlands, UK etc

Oranssi Pazuzu – Aluk Todolo – Cobalt

16681620_1370151299722631_4461425035955712240_n

Oranssi Pazuzu
“The trick is to avoid all the bands that are bragging about genre breaking or how mind blowing they are and just listen to Oranssi Pazuzu”. This quote from Fenriz’s radio show couldn’t have been a better spot on statement for the phenomenon that is Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu.
Since their inception, Oranssi Pazuzu has never been satisfied to stick with a formula. Each album has seen the band expand upon its previous incarnation and then, like a supernova, blow it up and transform again into something recognizable but completely new. With their first two albums, they slowly built a fuzz for their unique take on black metal’s pscyhedelia and despite using this genre as a platform it was their third album, Valonielu (2013), that solidified the band’s position as one of the most forward-thinking and interesting metal bands and gave purists a ran for their money. With press and fans praising the brilliance of that album, their live shows established them even more to the point where their live experience could be compared to the ones of Pink Floyd, Swans and Neurosis. And that’s coming from everybody that witnessed them on their tours and festivals performances all around Europe.
Their return on 2016 with their fourth album, Värähtelijä, gives the band much more room to diverge and explore the vast regions of hypnotic progressive psychedelia and the nebulous outer limits of Scandinavian black metal. Songs explode with radiant ultraviolet color and plunge into the deep black darkness of innermost consciousness. If ‘Valonielu’ was the creation of a universe, ‘Värähtelijä’ is the magnification and expansion of its infinite boundaries. With the album ending up on many best albums of the year lists, and not only in the metal circles, 2017 will be the busiest year for the band on stage starting with the “Mental Possessed Tour” where the band brings with them 2 of their peers, Aluk Todolo and Cobalt (on their first European tour) on selected days and making this tour not to be missed!
The “Mental Possessed Tour” will also coincide with the reissues of Oranssi Pazuzu’s backcatalogue including their first 2 albums, which have been sold out since their release, an EP consisting of the band’s material from their 2010 split with Candy Cane and also a limited 10” vinyl with two unreleased songs, which will be sold only on their live dates!
Not meant for genre purists, Oranssi Pazuzu are on a trip all their own; modern electric pioneers on an expedition to unlock the keys to the hidden spaces all around and inside us.

ALUK TODOLO is an instrumental power trio performing Occult Rock since 2004. Their music is a methodical exploration of the powers of musical trance. Part occult black metal fiend and part snide kraut menace, the band conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. ALUK TODOLO reduces psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, in which dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. The band’s sound is monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming: a dangerous, noxious coil of all things black.

The name ALUK TODOLO was brought back from a mountainous region of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, it’s an ancient religion with animist beliefs meaning «the Way of the Ancestors». The band toured in USA in 2009 and 2012, Southern Europe in May 2010 (France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal), Northern Europe in April 2011 with MENACE RUINE (France, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Czech republik, Switzerland) and Eastern Europe in May 2013 with the one man band LUSSURIA from New York (Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republik, Poland, Austria, Hungaria, Croatia, Solvenia, Italia, France), around the Alps in June 2016 with SUM OF R from Switzerland (France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Czech Republik, Hungary, Austria). ALUK TODOLO opened for FAUST (German krautrock pioneers) in New York in October 2009. They have been invited by SUNN O))) to play the Roadburn Festival 2011 in the Tilburg – Netherlands and opened for them in June 2012. They played festivals such as Incubate (Netherlands), Stella Natura (usa), Dark Bombastic Evening (Romania), Mega Therion (Finland), Colmar Jazz Off (France), Luff (Switzerland), le Guess Who ? (Netherlands), Sonic Protest (France), Funkelfug (Austria), Amplifest (Portugal), Chaos Descends (Germany), and will play in 2017 the Stardust IV (New York USA) and the Roadburn (Netherlands).

An archive collection of rare recordings from their first decade will be released in 2017 as well as the 4 albums on tape on Seratusribu records from Indonesia.

Cobalt

War Metal is the most fitting title Cobalt could choose to kick off their career. There is a deep sense of struggle and urgency, a devastating cause that left absolute carnage through its path that the band’s music radiated since the time of their inception. Cobalt, as nature, is red in tooth and claw, and there is no desire of hiding it.

This struggle, this unbroken will to battle and conflict was peaked with the genre-defining Eater of Birds, a testament to the spirit of the US black metal scene. Pouring with aggression and oozing with a primal energy, Cobalt showcased a unique blend of bitter black metal, a traditional approach that was rehashed and in turn rejuvenated. The additions of Americana, folk and noise do not necessarily provide an experimental approach to black metal, but rather a different interpretation of its historic, pure form. The imagery of Hemingway on the cover of Gin makes perfect sense, depicting the literary background of Gin and its influence on Cobalt’s ethos: the perfection of one’s craft, the certainty and conviction to one’s belief and the stoic perspective.

Hemingway’s famously writes: “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” This could not be more true for Cobalt, who saw the departure of vocalist Phil McSorley in 2014. Mainman Erik Wunder did not allow this to become the end of the road for his black metal endeavors, and recruiting Charlie Fell (ex-Lord Mantis) has worked wonders for the band and the quality of their releases. In 2016 they proved that they belong at the very top of the food chain releasing what is their finest work in Slow Forever, a double album filled with all the elements that their glorious past has produced, but also with an eye staring at the future and the path that lays ahead. This is Cobalt at its best. Uncompromising, relentless, hungry, constantly hunting and out for blood.

Band descriptions:

➤ MONOMYTH | The Hague, NL

THE VOYAGE. Unleashed from The Netherlands in 2011, with instrumental music as aim and rooted in Space, Trance, Prog, Ambient and Krautrock with trips into Psych, Drone and Stoner, Monomyth is a travel agency, a vehicle and a destination all in one. A collective journey and statement of five like-minded identities from different creative and musical backgrounds, who search for, explore and expand the boundaries of their own musical universe – leaning heavily on a solid foundation of drums and bass guitar, while adding guitar, keyboards and textures layer upon layer. Furthermore moving beyond to another world – to a cosmic playground that feels both new and familiar – an arena where there is no more time or space. A vacuum caused by shifting patterns, repetitions and drones, you can enter in two ways: Simply by closing your eyes and letting the instrumental music transport you. Or with your eyes wide open as you descend into the mind staggering light show. Clear, transparent and trance-inducing.

The Monomyth theory, conceived by Joseph Campbell, incorporates a systematic representation of an adventure, the band translates into a musical form and concepts through the the trilogy of their current records: While three years ago on their self-titled debut calling to adventure and the first exploration of the possibilities, and later on their second record ‘Further’ implementing the main theme of movement, the break through to the great unknown and the fusion to a coherent whole, with their new and third album ‘Exo’ Monomyth completes its own epic trilogy and sets foot ashore with the chapter of discovery – mapping of a completely new territory, a musical Exoplanet, with a few interesting experiments, new elements and surprises the attentive listener will notice. No matter what, the technical possibilities are utilised to perfection – both in music and story.

This is music for “the mind, the body and the soul”. This is… Monomyth.

➤ VAYL | Berlin, DE

The right sound to fuel this night’s spaceship for… take off!
