Orsten Groom’s “CHROME DINETTE” series to be exhibited at Urban Spree

For their last exhibition of the year, Urban Spree Galerie invites the French painter Orsten Groom to exhibit in Berlin his new incendiary series “CHROME DINETTE”. The solo show, his first exhibition in Germany, will open on Friday, October 23rd, 2020.

While being a radically independent artist, Orsten Groom has established himself in a few years as a key player in the young French painting scene, oscillating between alternative circles and museum institutions.

His first retrospective was presented this year at the ACMCM contemporary art centre in Perpignan (France) – at only 37 years old.

The Berlin exhibition brings together over 30 works, presented in two sections:

– the Large Ensemble of 17 paintings “CHROME DINETTE” (accompanied by its proverbial Divan), a danse macabre summoning Sigmund Freud, Moses and sick poodles – under the aegis of Frank Zappa;

– A retrospective selection of Orsten Groom’s emblematic large formats, a genuine «subconscious» journey with Parietal Sarcophagus allures.

Orsten Groom’s painting is presented as “Post-Historical Cave Art”.

The famous German artist Jonathan Meese said about him: “Orsten Groom comes from the caves and the Middle Ages and keeps history alive in today’s art. He comes from the future“.

Apocalyptic Frescoes, saturated with Creatures drawn from the Memory Styx by Demented Talmudic Investigations, Carnivalesque Recapitulation of History from the Flow of Origins and Art History – His Painting roars on Large Canvases populated with Figures entangled by Mythological and Grotesque Archetypes, Danses Macabres gleaned by a Language Detective, an Amnesiac Epileptic Archaeologist. Its Material is Dense, Volcanic, inhabited like the ancient Livers of a Divinatory Ritual.

«This turmoil is similar to the one I feel in the Grottos of Lascaux or Chauvet, in front of El Greco or Picasso paintings, or, in the 20th century, facing the essential work of Gérard Gasiorowski», writes Olivier Kaeppelin, former Director of the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and curator of his recent Parisian Exhibition POMPEII MASTURBATOR.

Orsten Groom experienced in 2002 an aneurysm that left him amnesic and epileptic. He graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2009 and Le Fresnoy in 2011. He is the recipient of several awards: Prix l’art est vivant (2019), Prix de Peinture de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts (2016) and Prix de Peinture Antoine Marin (2015). The reputed paint manufacturer Marin manufactures a colour to his name, the “Pink Groom”.

He is also a musician, author of collections of English cubist poems, filmmaker (2011 Jury Prize for his film BOBOK at the festival Côté-Court) and since 2012 author of the video cycle Les Ballets Russes.

He has collaborated with curators and authors Olivier Kaeppelin and Paul Ardenne, the filmmaker Guy Maddin, the translator and poet André Markowicz, as well as the writer Boris Wolowiec.

“Check your Privilege”: a new mural by the Low Bros

The Urban Spree Artist Wall is a highly visible wall in Berlin, deploying its painted surface of 120sqm (15 x 8 meters) opposite Warschauer Str.

As is usually the case with most exhibitions, the artists paint the first piece of their show on this wall, resulting in a massive statement work for their indoor exhibition.

“Check Your Privilege” is the 3rd mural painted by the Low Bros at Urban Spree and is perhaps their most significant outdoor work to date as it emphasizes strong cultural and societal points, further developed in their solo show “CON.TXT’ (on display until September 6th, 2020).

In the words of Anna Ptasinska: « With the #BlackLivesMatters movement sweeping the global community, it is now, more than ever, that white people need to acknowledge their responsibility to dismantle oppressive, racist systems. Influenced by the book ‘Exit Racism’ by Tupoka Ogette & Robin DiAngelo’s ‘White Fragility,’ Low Bros have partnered with IDB (Institut für diskriminierungsfreie Bildung), Josephine Apraku and Jule Bönkost for this exhibition. As an educational starting point, this exhibition aims to amplify and continue the conversation surrounding white privilege and asks questions of how it can be better utilized in institutions, as well as private & public spaces. While the search for answers is ongoing, the artworks aim is to highlight the problems of unchecked whiteness, especially when it is being recognized as a default perspective in society. By debunking the concept of privileges and problems, the context of this exhibition aims to engage whiteness as an ally to the BIPOC community.”

Orsten Groom: Chrome Dinette

From October 23rd to January 23rd 2021, Urban Spree Galerie is pleased to offer the painter Orsten Groom his first solo exhibition in Germany, “CHROME DINETTE”.

As a radically independent and self-managed artist, Orsten Groom has established himself in a few years as a key player in the young French painting scene, between alternative circles and museum institutions.

His first retrospective was presented this year at the ACMCM contemporary art centre in Perpignan (France) – at only 37 years old.

The Berlin exhibition brings together over thirty works, presented in two sections:

– the Large Ensemble of 17 paintings “CHROME DINETTE” (accompanied by its proverbial Divan), a crazed round about the links binding Sigmund Freud and Moses through Ancient Egypt & Sick Poodles – all under the aegis of Frank Zappa;

– A vast Recapitulative Selection of Orsten Groom’s emblematic large formats, a genuine «subconscious» journey with Parietal Sarcophagus allures.

Implanted in the heart of Berlin, the Urban Spree Galerie has been for more than 8 years an unavoidable reference in urban arts, understood as a manifestation of a post-parietal art, which inscribes graffiti at the heart of its practice, on a large scale.

The opening will be accompanied by a concert by the POODLE MHUND ARKESTRA, formed for the occasion by Orsten Groom, the Magnificent Jimmy Trash & Big Daddy Mugglestone.

Arbeitstitel completes the 4th and final wall of the StillStand Project

The Berlin artist duo Arbeitstitel (Robert Westphal | Laurent Wians) has completed their mural at Urban Spree, the 4th of the StillStand series and the final wall of the project.

The duo painted an abstract composition, made essentially from fragmented elements and visually impressive with a bright palette, enhanced by sparks of fluorescent yellow.

The AT20 mural at Urban Spree, facing Warschauer Str., will be visible until around the end of July 2020. Photos by Lukas K. Stiller.

“THIS!”: 3rd Print in the Mode 2 “Lockdown” Series

“Straight outta Lockdown / The Freedom Prints” is a series of vintage Mode 2 prints (from the mid 2000s to the early 2010s), hand-painted or hand-sprayed in 2020, and re-numbered in very limited runs.

“THIS!” is the third release of the series and by far the oldest print, having been published in 2003 by PoW in London.

Based on a flyer for the “THIS!” parties at Bar Rumba initially drawn in Mode 2’s blackbook, the motive was digitally printed in quadtone and has been hand-sprayed by Mode 2 in June 2020 with 3 matching tones of Belton.

The final run of this new series amounts to 24 prints only, signed and numbered.

“THIS!” 68cm X 45cm One of three series of vintage prints, a full colour digital print, customised and renumbered edition of 24. . I met @swifty_grafix with @robiwalters a show at the Blue Note club in London, December 1996. He had @kambhogal_  and @freddeak.in working with them up in Ladbroke Grove, at #studiobabylon . They plugged me in to a part of the London club scene, connected to labels like Talking Loud or to (Straight No) Chaser magazine and so on. . @mitchy_bwoy joined springtime 1997, running the London club flyer scene; from Jah Shaka, to Passenger, or Movement at Bar Rumba itself among many others. . Discovering “That's How It Is” at Bar Rumba was love at first sight. In 1993, @janinedingwalls and @gillespeterson were offered a night at a West End venue, and Gilles suggested Mondays, a clean break from the weekend crowd. He suggested to have @unkleofficial join him, while @beesayed backed Janine up on all her club sessions. @ben_wilcox99 later joined the team, and then there were also illustrious guests. . My blackbook drawing (photos by @louis_curiosities ) shows the parachute on the ceiling, hiding the @funktiononeofficial speakers delivering an eclectic serving of music that attracted the faithful from the world over. . I did a few banners over the years (the one at the door getting stolen!), with paint reacting to black light, but the drawing was first used in 1999, when the name switched to “THIS!”; and from it came a bunch of other drawings of club scenes and dancing crowds. . When @stevelazarides asked me to join PYMCA in 2003, the flyer became one of four prints I did for him. I rescued what I could carry of all remaining ones from Pictures On Walls in October 2018, then decided during the lockdown that we should re-release them; not without enhancing each one with matching Belton colours from @legacybln , and transforming them into something much more personalised. . “Sofa Spank”, “Oh Sh…” and “THIS!” go on sale at @urban_spree this Thursday 9th of July at 18:00 CET. Link in bio. . That's it. There will be no more left stashed away after that. . #mode2official #mode2 #londonnights #clubnights #vintageprint #customised #straightnochaser

“Oh Sh…”: 2nd Print in the “Straight outta Lockdown” Mode 2 series

“Straight outta Lockdown / The Freedom Prints” is a series of vintage Mode 2 prints (from the mid 2000s to the early 2010s), hand-painted or hand-sprayed in 2020, and re-numbered in very limited runs.

The second print of the series is called “Oh Sh…”, originally produced in 2009 but never released owing to some specks of alien colors spotted on most prints while signing them. Mode 2 decided subsequently to call off the run and keep only the good prints for future use.

11 years later, the message conveyed by the print couldn’t actually be more acute, in a news ecosystem battered down by fake news, outright lies, and state violence.

The prints have been reconfigured in a 40-print run, all hand-sprayed with 3 different colors matching the original tones (gray, red, white), signed and numbered by Mode 2.

“Oh Sh…” One of three series of vintage prints released by @urban_spree ; a 3-colour silkscreen print, customised and renumbered as an edition of 40. . Back in 2006, I started subscribing to @mondediplo , a monthly French newspaper part-owned by its subscribers, editorially more independent and impartial than most. I rarely finish all articles during busy months, as each reads like a university thesis in its complexity; bringing historical, cultural and geopolitical context to the saturation of 24/7/365 selected data parading as news today. . It's a depressing read at times, exposing and deconstructing the dysfunctions of our world; which is what inspired the original “Oh Sh…” drawing. I often wonder where would society be if many more people were less complacent and apathetic in the way they informed themselves on the world around them. It would greatly help in the crucial and polarising debates of today. . I only have a digital scan of the original drawing, as the A5 blackbook that it was in was stolen in Barcelona, January 2007, during the Bread & Butter trade show. . Ten of us sitting around a big table outside of a bar, and nobody saw a thing, when I went to the bathroom. NEVER leave people in charge of what is irreplacable for you. Thieves are SLICK over there! . In October that same year, I decided to release a print of it for my #party&bullshit show at @mahahardy 's DPMHI shop, for which I also did a painting on linen of the same visual. . I found far too many prints with tiny spots of pastel yellow on, when signing and numbering; so I pulled the series from the show, keeping only the good ones. They are now being re-released, after having been individually enhanced with grey, white and red spray-paint; the Belton black stock caps giving that “spittle” technique. . “Oh Sh…” is an apt metaphor of the shock of this pandemic, the protests sparked by the murder of George Floyd, and how governments use this to railroad in new measures, colluding with the deluge of lies and contradictions fed to us by once trustworthy news sources.    . #mode2official #mode2 #ohshit #vintageprint #customised #badnews #protests #breadandbutter
