Orsten Groom’s “CHROME DINETTE” series to be exhibited at Urban Spree

For their last exhibition of the year, Urban Spree Galerie invites the French painter Orsten Groom to exhibit in Berlin his new incendiary series “CHROME DINETTE”. The solo show, his first exhibition in Germany, will open on Friday, October 23rd, 2020.

While being a radically independent artist, Orsten Groom has established himself in a few years as a key player in the young French painting scene, oscillating between alternative circles and museum institutions.

His first retrospective was presented this year at the ACMCM contemporary art centre in Perpignan (France) – at only 37 years old.

The Berlin exhibition brings together over 30 works, presented in two sections:

– the Large Ensemble of 17 paintings “CHROME DINETTE” (accompanied by its proverbial Divan), a danse macabre summoning Sigmund Freud, Moses and sick poodles – under the aegis of Frank Zappa;

– A retrospective selection of Orsten Groom’s emblematic large formats, a genuine «subconscious» journey with Parietal Sarcophagus allures.

Orsten Groom’s painting is presented as “Post-Historical Cave Art”.

The famous German artist Jonathan Meese said about him: “Orsten Groom comes from the caves and the Middle Ages and keeps history alive in today’s art. He comes from the future“.

Apocalyptic Frescoes, saturated with Creatures drawn from the Memory Styx by Demented Talmudic Investigations, Carnivalesque Recapitulation of History from the Flow of Origins and Art History – His Painting roars on Large Canvases populated with Figures entangled by Mythological and Grotesque Archetypes, Danses Macabres gleaned by a Language Detective, an Amnesiac Epileptic Archaeologist. Its Material is Dense, Volcanic, inhabited like the ancient Livers of a Divinatory Ritual.

«This turmoil is similar to the one I feel in the Grottos of Lascaux or Chauvet, in front of El Greco or Picasso paintings, or, in the 20th century, facing the essential work of Gérard Gasiorowski», writes Olivier Kaeppelin, former Director of the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and curator of his recent Parisian Exhibition POMPEII MASTURBATOR.

Orsten Groom experienced in 2002 an aneurysm that left him amnesic and epileptic. He graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2009 and Le Fresnoy in 2011. He is the recipient of several awards: Prix l’art est vivant (2019), Prix de Peinture de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts (2016) and Prix de Peinture Antoine Marin (2015). The reputed paint manufacturer Marin manufactures a colour to his name, the “Pink Groom”.

He is also a musician, author of collections of English cubist poems, filmmaker (2011 Jury Prize for his film BOBOK at the festival Côté-Court) and since 2012 author of the video cycle Les Ballets Russes.

He has collaborated with curators and authors Olivier Kaeppelin and Paul Ardenne, the filmmaker Guy Maddin, the translator and poet André Markowicz, as well as the writer Boris Wolowiec.

Mode 2 x Urban Spree: “Straight Outta Lockdown” HPM prints to be released

“Straight outta Lockdown / The Freedom Prints” is a series of vintage Mode 2 prints (from the mid 2000s to the early 2010s), hand-painted or hand-sprayed in 2020, and re-numbered in very limited runs.

We inaugurate this summer with a series of print releases from the Berlin-based graffiti “legend” (he HATES that term!) Mode 2.

Published originally by Pictures on Walls, Lazarides, MHI or Sergeant Paper, most prints sold out quickly, some runs were never released, and the artist recently came across much of these print archives that had been stashed away years ago; some from his personal quota and the rest returned by the publishers.

The idea came to release them again, though not without hand-finishing each series; even the ones that had already been through this process.
Each print has therefore been custom-painted by Mode 2, to embellish the works with matching Belton spray colors or acrylic paint. Those HPMs have been re-numbered to create a new edition, with added aesthetic value and a marked difference from the original release.

The first print of the series is called “Sofa Spank”, originally released in 2010

“Sofa Spank” Part of the “Straight Outta Lockdown; the Freedom prints” series. Vintage 3-colour silkscreen print; customised and renumbered as an edition of 20. . When the pandemic hit us all, and our plans were either postponed or cancelled; I realised that I should hold back with originals, looking back into my archives, to see what hidden gems had been stashed away for years. I had reclaimed many of my prints back years ago, knowing that I would re-release them at a later date; transforming them into something a little special, to completely differentiate them from the original releases. . “Sofa Spank” was a double-page drawing in an old A3 sketchbook, from early 2004; a nudge and a wink of sorts to the kind of games that consenting adults get up to in private. I have been attracted to erotica probably since seeing the “Abraxas” cover from Santana as a child, or been exposed to @heavymetal comics maybe a little TOO early. In all my public work though, I have always tried not to cross that line separating sensuality or erotica on one side, from vulgarity and sexism on the other. . In other words, and given the tensions created by the lockdown, this image is more to do with the rediscovered intimacy during prolonged periods of time spent with one's partner, than any kind of allusion to domestic violence; apparently on the rise these past months. . Looking through the chronology of images, “Sofa Spank” was redrawn then made as a pastel drawing on wallpaper for my “A Matter Of Taste” show at the Dragon Bar, late October 2004, as well on 70cm X 100cm heavy card, for “Santa's Ghetto” on Charing Cross Road the following December. No idea WHAT happened to ANY of these pieces! . The drawing was made into a print for my 2010 WeSC show at Galerie Issue in Paris, as one of four erotic print editions, which I withdrew after having sold a third of the run. . I spent some days mid-June customising this and two other prints, with spray-paint supplied by @legacybln ; transforming “Sofa Spank” into a special limited edition that will go on sale via @urban_spree VERY soon… . #mode2official #mode2 #sofaspank #vintageprints #handfinished #erotica #urbanspree

Urban Spree Galerie at Urvanity Art Fair

Urban Spree Galerie will participate to the 3rd Edition of Urvanity Art (28.02-03-03.2019) at COAM in the center of Madrid.

The fair is dedicated to urban contemporary arts and for its first participation to a Spanish art fair, the gallery has designed on 60 sqm a program with 9 artists, mainly based or linked to Berlin, as well as a solo show of works from Hendrik Czakainski

As for the graffiti part, we are showing photographic works from Martha Cooper/1UP of the acclaimed series “One Week with 1UP”, whose exhibition about the Berlin-based graffiti vandal crew was created at Urban Spree in May 2018 and toured worldwide ever since.

Cpt_Olf is joining the roster as well with an iconic image about the Berlin Kidz/Os Cururu.

Bisco Smith (NYC) and Sicoer (Krakow) will be showing  their calligraffiti/handstyle skills, both on canvases as well as on paper, through a series of medium-sized inks.

EVOL is a German artist renowned for his detailed stencils on cardboard, his large installations, and his outdoor works on electric boxes, depicting Berlin cityscapes and houses, Plattenbau, and the constant evolution and fragility of the metropolis.

We will also be showing new works on paper from Marion Jdanoff (the half of of French duo Palefroi) and from Victor Ash, adding some portraits painted by Anthony Lister under the influence of Picasso during his Berlin residency at Urban Spree in September 2018.

Last but not the least, we will introduce 3 new paintings from Lars Wunderlich (a.k.a. Look The Weird) as a preview to his upcoming solo show with the gallery in April 2019.

Please contact the gallery ahead of the fair with any questions or requests you may have.

Bisco Smith x Urban Spree: 2 new t-shirts and hoodies announced

Bisco Smith designs 2 exclusive t-shirts and hoodies for Urban Spree.

Following his Residency in Berlin earlier this year, the Brooklyn-based calligraffiti artist adds his signature handstyle to our Artist Series.

The series is limited to a run of 50 hoodies and 50 t-shirts only.

They are manually screen printed in-house at Urban Spree in Berlin.

The back motive reads “Urban Spree” in a complex, free flow handstyle which is the trademark of the American artist, while the front medallion represents a simplified version of the motive – also called “throw-up”. The black hoodies and t-shirts are printed with a gunpowder shimmering water-based grey ink.

The Urban Spree Artist Series is a limited edition of screen printed calligraphic t-shirts and hoodies in collaboration with graffiti and visual artists.

The series will be available on our website on Thursday, November 29th at 12:00 (noon) NYC time and 18:00 in Berlin.

Hell’O Collective opens “Balance” at Urban Spree Galerie

Starting on Friday 01.06 at 19:00, Urban Spree Galerie invites you to the Opening of “Balance“, a solo presentation of new works by the famed belgian duo Hell’O Collective in our main galerie space and their first solo show in Germany.

Running in parallel with their 10-year retrospective museum solo show at the BAM in Mons (“Enjoy the Show” at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, Belgium, until 29.07.2018), “Balance” brings a brand new series of paintings on canvas and on paper to the Berlin audience.

For the Brussels-based duo, “Balance” reflects upon the constant search of the equilibrium between shape, color, and momentum in their painting practice and the need to achieve a new balance occurred as a renewed necessity after the hefty preparations for the museum show

Hell’O will also sign their new complete monograph “Untitled Oddyssey“, published in early May by CFC Editions.

Hell’O is a belgian artistic duo consisting of Antoine Detaille and Jérôme Meynen, active in murals as well as studio works and installations.

Several characteristics of their art indicate a filiation with the middle-age universe close to Jerome Bosch: an elegant and precise graphism, a taste for multiple, intertwined universes, and abundant references to a corpus of grotesque iconography, albeit perfectly mastered. Abstracted human bodies are among the many recurrent elements that are present in their paintings together with abstract, geometric signs, creating an overall rich personal mythology.

Urban Spree Prints will also release 2 screenprints specially made by the duo for the occasion.
